church work most, because she loved the Lord, and fortunate were the many
pupils which she taught in the years she served as a teacher in the

Mary Yvonne Starkey, known by her friends and
family as "Yvonne" and "Nana," died Friday,
She was born in 1935 to Zeb and
Lessie Deaton and grew up in the Boggs Chapel Community with sisters Peggy
Hoover and Jean Luttrell and
brother Aaron Deaton. Yvonne graduated from Paden High School in 1952 and moved
to Memphis, Tennessee, where she worked and played on a local women's
basketball team. She returned to Tishomingo and began to date Ed Starkey who
was in the U. S. Army and was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. While dating, Ed
and Yvonne often drove to luka in his 1952 baby blue Ford and ate grilled
cheese sandwiches at the Pan Am Cafe.
On
members. Her specialty was
personalized birthday cakes for family and friends. A recurring theme in her
cakes was the dreaded "old man" who appeared on the cake to let the
birthday person know that time was passing.
Yvonne also found time to attend
Northeast Community College and the University of North Alabama to take
education classes and to pursue hobbies such as painting, ceramics, and stained
glass design.
The passing of time requires much
of us, and Yvonne along with her sisters, Peggy and Jean, rose to the occasion
in taking care of their elderly parents in their last years. Yvonne provided
loving care for her husband Ed after his stroke and until his death in 1998.
The Starkey place became a second
home for many extended family members and friends of the children. Yvonne had a
particular knack for welcoming people into her home and making them a part of
her family. Many people have fond memories of gatherings during the holidays,
singing around the fire, or simple quiet time spent on the deck. Yvonne's home
was eulogized by Rev. Earl MacAnally as being a "safe place" for many
in these times of change.
Those who knew Yvonne Starkey
admired and enjoyed her true passion for life, for "Livin" every day
to its fullest. Her passions were many and diverse and included maintaining the
family home, fishing, homemade ice cream, collecting rocks from the travels of
her children, guineas, riding her four-wheeler in "the bottom," and
singing.
She was most passionate about her
family. She was a devoted daughter to her parents and wholly committed to her
husband, Edward. She unconditionally loved her children and their families. Her
grandchildren, Bryant Starkey & Starkey-Morgan Ludlam of
North Carolina. Over the course of
this time, Yvonne and her husband had four children: Daniel, Carole, Paul, and
Mary Jo. The Starkey family returned to Huntsville after their tour at Fort
Bragg, North Carolina, and Ed Starkey retired from the Army at that location.
Later, Yvonne and her family
returned to Tishomingo, where they built their home on Carter's Branch Road.
While her children were completing school and college, Yvonne worked a variety
of jobs, including assisting her husband with farming; working in local
manufacturing plants; and organizing and running the bakery at the Piggly
Wiggly Grocery in luka.
Yvonne was a gifted cook and opened
two bake shops in Tishomingo and with her sister Jean in Paden. Many people
still have fond memories of her
McClung, and Steven Starkey.
Honorary Pallbearers were her nephews, David Luttrell, David Starkey, Jimmy
Starkey, Denton Copeland, Fred Starkey, Nash Starkey, and John Blackburn; and
friends of the family Bud Shewbart, Eugene Riley, Jerome Johnson, John
McDougal, James Belue and the Back Porch Gang.' Memorials may be made to the
Salem Cemetery Fund, the Friendship Church Cemetery Fund, the American Heart
Association, or the Disabled American Veterans.
The family wishes to thank the
staff at Ludlam's Funeral Home, the many friends, family and members of the
church who gave comfort during our sorrow. We also hope that we all will
remember Yvonne for the passion she held for life.

He was a devout advocate and worker for the cleaning up and elevating of his county. His unfaltering devotion to the task showed him standing erect and sturdy as a marble shaft in the face of opposition and true as steel to his cause and his associates.
He merited that confidence which was universally indulged by his thousands of friends.
His position, and devotion to the public welfare was entirely immune to counter currents and unworthy efforts at pressure from foul sources and polluted breezes and was fixed as the unchangeable star on which the mariners always se t their charts with confidence.
