EDITH
GAINES
A Tribute To Edith Gaines
When the spirit of Edith Gaines,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Gaines of the Hill’s ‘Chapel community took
leave of this world,
As a friend, she was unexcelled and lovable.
As a pupil, she was the type who makes teaching a pleasure and pays dividends to the teacher, that are precious jewels. It was an inspiration to have Edith in the class. Al though she was very quiet and modest, her work was of the very best grade.
At Sunday School she seemed to shine. When others failed, Edith was there. On May 6, she wrote, “There were not many at Sunday School last Sunday, but I aim to keep on going.” Our favorite Bible verse was Matthew 28:20-”Lo, I ant with you always, even unto the end of the world.” She quoted t often. It meant much to her.
At home, as everywhere she wore a smile. Never have I seen a brighter face.
It is with reverence and in obedience that we bow in submission to God’s will. We can never as human beings under stand why such lives are ended so soon. Although it is our nature to grieve because of her going, we can still be thankful that she came our way, even in awhile.
The funeral was held at Blythe’s Chapel with the pastor, Reverend J. B. Roberts, in charge. The body was laid in the cemetery there, beneath a mound of lovely flowers.
One of her teachers.

Baldwyn historian and author

Gentry, founder of Gentry Insurance Agency in Baldwyn, had a lively and varied career.
The high school dropout once owned two movie theaters in Baldwyn, the Ritz and the Lyric.
He quit school after the 10th grade because a 12th had been added to the curriculum, and started a taxi service for traveling salesmen.
Then, he became a banker, working
first for the Bank of Baldwyn, then for The Peoples Bank in
At age 20, in 1922, he married Gladys Hester of Guntown, quit the bank and moved back to Baldwyn where his father ran a restaurant.
During the 1930s and '40s, Gentry ran the two movie theatres and, in 1939, he founded The Lyric News, the forerunner to the present day Baldwyn News which he edited and publishes until the late 1940s.
Gentry said he originally began the newspaper as a means of advertising his movie theaters.
At 50, Gentry learned to pilot an airplane and eventually bought two planes.
He also became an author around the
same time, taking a suggestion from Paul Flowers, a columnist for The
